Fusion Energy Alliance Launches to Accelerate Fusion in the UK

The launch of the Fusion Energy Alliance comes at a pivotal moment for the UK’s energy future, following the UK Government’s appointment of the ILIOS consortium to deliver the STEP fusion programme at West Burton.

The announcement signals growing momentum behind fusion as a viable energy source and reinforces the UK’s position at the forefront of fusion development.

The Fusion Energy Alliance is a new, industry-led initiative bringing together leaders across policy, industry, and capital to accelerate the role of fusion energy in the UK energy system.

By convening a small group of organisations, the Alliance aims to connect fusion with real-world energy demand, investment, and policy — supporting the transition from concept to deployment.

Eric Lewis, Managing Director, Foresight Industries, said: “Nuclear fusion is much closer than people realise and has favourable deployment pathways in comparison to fission. The ILIOS consortium also sends a strong signal that we can develop fusion technology in the UK. We plan to promote fusion as a new energy source in its own field and move beyond the traditional ‘nuclear’ label.”
